Four trials were conducted to investigate the effects of linseed supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics, liver and plasma lipid composition, and liver and plasma glutathione levels of broiler chickens fed diets with increased concentrations of dietary unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) at 4 weeks and 10 weeks of age. In each trial, four dietary treatments were evaluated: a standard diet, a diet supplemented with 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, or 0.20% dietary linseed from 4 to 10 weeks of age, giving a total of eight dietary treatments. In all trials, no significant differences in growth performance and carcass characteristics were observed between broilers fed diets containing 0.05 to 0.20% linseed and broilers fed diets containing 0.05% linseed. In contrast, diets containing 0.20% linseed decreased liver aspartate aminotransferase activity at 4 weeks of age and increased liver and plasma levels of UFA at 10 weeks of age, compared with the standard diet. In the liver, linseed supplementation increased the percentage of UFA at 10 weeks of age and decreased the percentage of MUFA at 10 weeks of age, without affecting the percentage of SFA. Supplementation of diets with linseed increased liver and plasma levels of UFA at 10 weeks of age, compared with diets supplemented with sunflower oil. Supplementation of diets with linseed also increased liver and plasma levels of vitamin E, compared with the standard diet. In conclusion, the effects of linseed supplementation on broiler performance and carcass characteristics were minimal. In contrast, linseed supplementation improved the oxidative status of broiler chickens, supporting the contention that supplementation of diets with high levels of linseed enhances broiler performance and quality via increasing antioxidant capacity.It’s Time to Go All-In on Artificial Intelligence
